Why Churches should engage with the Olympics and
Paralympic Games and Cultural Olympiad?
Read the story so far and some theological reasons by The Bishop of Barking.
As our nations prepare the host the Olympic & Paralympic Games in 2012, there are a number of agencies delivering the Games who need our prayers.
The London Organising Group of Olympic & Paralymic Games (LOCOG)
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games is a limited company, owned by the Government, responsible for preparing and staging the 2012 Games is based in Canary Wharf www.london2012.com
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is the public body responsible for developing and building the new venues and infrastructure for the Games and their use after 2012, based in Canary Wharf www.london2012.com
The Nations and Regions Group (NRG) will make sure the whole of the UK is involved in and benefits from the 2012 Games. The NRG is made up of 12 senior representatives from UK business and sport: nine from the English regions and one each from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (the 'home nations') www.london2012.com
The five host boroughs: Greenwich; Tower Hamlets; Hackney; Waltham Forest and Newham. The site of the Olympic Park is in E London. The statutory agencies have developed a joint plan across these boroughs to maximize the opportunities for regeneration after the Games. www.newham.gov.uk/2012/. The churches need to work together more and gear up for once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to pray, serve, reach out and make a difference to local communities with the assistance of hundreds of missionaries who will come. Transform Newham is a network of individuals, groups and churches working together in different ways to signpost God's Kingdom and is working with More than Gold to help churches engage with the Games www.transformnewham.com
More than Gold's mission is to enable the UK churches to engage with the 2012 Games through service, mission and hospitality. This is being done by helping people catch the vision, making connections between agencies and churches, co-ordinating resources and action needed.
