HEALTHCARE SUNDAY 2011

JEFF DYAS

This year's theme for Healthcare Sunday (16th October) will focus around those in training and medical/nursing/health professional education, lecturers and academics.

In the UK there are over 105 nursing schools, 35 medical schools, about 80,000 nursing students and 40,000 medical students. That does not include all those training in the many other health professions.  These students are the future workforce and leadership of the health professions in this country. Their lecturers and the various academics at these institutions are shaping the professional practice and careers of a whole generation of health professionals.  At a time when medical technology is advancing extremely quickly, when the economic pressures on health services are strained, and when there is a huge time of upheaval and change in how healthcare is to be provided, these next generations of health professionals will face massive challenges.  They need our prayer and support.

Because of the sheer numbers, every church will know at least one student - either worshipping at their church, or a friend or relative who is away studying.  Many churches will be near a medical or nursing school, or another training institution.

This year's Healthcare Sunday will be an opportunity for churches to find out about the students, lecturers, academics and trainers in their own congregations, and to pray knowledgeably about the challenges that they face, offer support, fellowship and recognition of the vital role that they are playing in our society, and to help understand better how the church can be a resource to those in training.
