Bearing Witness in Manchester City Centre
3 Oct 2011Thank you to everyone who came to participate in Bearing Witness on Saturday, and everyone who prayed but couldn't be there. It was a fantastic day of action, prayer and witness to the changing climate!
Together we sent a clear message to the Government that they must keep their ‘greenest Government ever' promise and do more to protect poor communities on the frontline of the changing climate.
Over 1,000 Tearfund, CAFOD and Christian Aid supporters gathered in Manchester on Saturday. Some had rallied many times before, for others it was a first taste of being part of the church speaking out on behalf of those affected by climate change.
Tearfund hosted an afternoon equipping and resourcing campaigners to meet their MPs and MEPs. We were challenged and inspired by Tearfund's President, Elaine Storkey, and heard first hand about how climate change is affecting people right now from the Evangelical Association of Malawi's James Kalikwembe, working with communities adapting to climate change.
Following a packed service in Manchester Cathedral we were led by a marching band right through the centre of town, before a prayer vigil in Albert Square. People sang and raised their voices for the Government to keep their ‘greenest Government ever' promise, and above all people prayed.
Terry told us that he was in Manchester, "because action on climate change is a priority for me and it MUST be a top priority for our government." We were very encouraged that Bearing Witness featured on Sky News and in the Guardian, getting this message across.
But our prayers and actions don't stop here. In a month's time Christians from across the world will be praying and speaking out in their homes and churches about climate change as part of Hope for Creation, the global day of prayer on Sunday 6 November.
