Commonwealth Prayer Initiative
The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2011 is currently taking place in Perth, Australia and brings together 54 national leaders, foreign ministers, spouses and other forums such as youth and business. It meets every two years.
Colin Barnett, State Premier Australia, asked ‘for the West Australian community to get right behind CHOGM', the biggest event to happen in Perth in many decades. Church leaders in Perth decided to do this by praying for a successful and safe event and for the leaders and nations involved.
Church leaders in other nations decided to join in, taking the initiative beyond the initial scope of CHOGM to become a global wave of prayer across the Commonwealth, involving many hundreds of thousands of people. Non-member nations have also expressed a desire to be part of this initiative.
Over 2 billion people live in the Commonwealth of Nations. They represent ¼ of the world's population and ⅓ of the world nations, spread over every continent. The Commonwealth Prayer Initiative aims to strengthen and connect these people and their nations - through Christ centered prayer.
Pray for:
- Pray for the people who have come from far and wide to join the prayer initiative
- Pray that the Holy Spirit will fill each meeting and/gathering with His presence
- Pray for the organizers and workers in the city for divine guidance
- Bring International Government leaders and the CHOGM 2011 in strong and focused prayer to the Throne of Grace
"The Commonwealth Prayer Initiative provides us with an amazing opportunity, not only to pray for an international event to be held in our nation, but also to pray for each nation represented. I commend this initiative to all who seriously want to pray for issues of national and international significance." - Brian Pickering, Australian Prayer Network
